Choosing a Landscape Contractor

In recent years, perhaps due to the popularity of garden makeover shows on television, landscape design has taken on a far greater importance than it had even just ten years ago.   People tend to view their outside space, whether large or small, as an additional room, particularly in the summer months.  They enjoy eating outside and entertaining their friends there and so they will want to ensure that the space is shown off to its best advantage.  This is where a good landscape contractor comes in.  Many people have ambitious ideas for their gardens and are prepared to pay a professional to put those ideas into effect.

A landscape contractor will probably oversee your new garden project from start to finish and will undertake the heavy tasks such as laying new lawns, constructing patios, walls and paths.  Many will also carry out any major planting of trees and large shrubs and a good landscape contractor will be able to offer advice on planting and maybe recommend a good supplier, even if you intend to do this part yourself.

It is not difficult to come up with a list of local landscape contractors: simply consult the business pages of your telephone directory, or even your local newspaper.  It is more difficult to make a choice of the right one for you.  It is always useful to have a recommendation from a friend who has used a particular landscape contractor and if possible to see some examples of their work.  In any case you will need to ask your potential landscape contractor to visit the site, make an evaluation and come up with an estimate for the work.  A good landscape contractor will offer suggestions and advice, as well as taking your wishes into account.  When the estimate is received you will need to know exactly what is included in the cost, how long the work is likely to take and when the work can start.

Once you have made your choice and the work has started you will still need to keep an eye on the project.  Is the landscape contractor carrying it out in the way you wanted?  Does he/she consult you from time to time to ensure you are happy with the work?  Does he/she carry out the work with minimum disruption and mess? At the conclusion of the project has the site been left clean and tidy?

Take time in choosing your landscape contractor.  A good landscape contractor can transform your garden into a beautiful space which you will enjoy using for years to come.
